ESA TSSA certification HVAC
What ESA and TSSA Certification Mean for Ontario HVAC Work
When you hire someone to install a furnace, heat pump or air conditioner in Ontario, you’ll often see two organizations referenced: the ESA and the TSSA. Both exist to keep the work — and your home — safe.
ESA: electrical safety
The Electrical Safety Authority administers Ontario’s electrical safety rules, including the Ontario Electrical Safety Code. HVAC equipment frequently involves electrical connections, and electrical work in Ontario must comply with ESA requirements. For homeowners, ESA oversight is a layer of assurance that the electrical side of an installation is done to code.
TSSA: fuels and pressure equipment
The Technical Standards and Safety Authority regulates fuels (such as natural gas), boilers and pressure vessels, and other technical safety areas in Ontario. Gas-fired equipment like a furnace falls under TSSA’s scope, which is why gas work must be performed by appropriately certified technicians.
Why it matters when you hire
Choosing a contractor who is certified to the relevant ESA and TSSA standards means:
- The work is performed to recognized provincial safety codes
- Gas and electrical connections are handled by qualified people
- You reduce the risk of safety issues and failed inspections down the road
Before any installation, it’s reasonable to ask a contractor about their certifications. Reputable HVAC companies are happy to confirm them — and proper certification is one of the clearest signals that a contractor takes safety seriously.
